The Gates Foundation announced a massive 20 percent workforce reduction while simultaneously launching an external investigation into Bill Gates’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The dual announcement comes as shocking new allegations surface from recently released documents.
Foundation Orders External Investigation
CEO Mark Suzman disclosed in an internal memo that the foundation commissioned an outside review of its engagement with Epstein. The investigation will also examine policies governing how philanthropic partnerships are vetted and approved. Suzman acknowledged the foundation faces a challenging period but emphasized the importance of taking difficult actions now. An update on the review is expected this summer.
Disturbing Emails and Photos Released
The Justice Department released emails in January showing correspondence between Epstein and Gates Foundation staff members. The documents included photographs of Gates with Epstein, along with images of Gates alongside women with redacted faces. In February, the foundation issued a statement denying any financial payments to Epstein or employment relationship. Gates maintains his contact with Epstein was limited to philanthropic discussions and has called the meetings a mistake.
Shocking New Allegations Emerge
Recently released Epstein files contain disturbing allegations against Gates. A 2013 email appearing to be written in the voice of Gates adviser Boris Nikolic suggests the Microsoft founder sought drugs to address consequences of encounters with Russian women. The email indicates Gates requested antibiotics to secretly drug his then-wife Melinda Gates. The message began with a lengthy statement about disregarding friendship after being asked to participate in a cover-up to protect Gates’s reputation.
Foundation Under Sustained Scrutiny
The philanthropic organization has faced mounting pressure since details of Gates’s association with Epstein became public knowledge. During a February town hall meeting, a spokesperson told Reuters that Gates took responsibility for his actions regarding Epstein ties. Gates has denied any contact with victims of Epstein’s sexual abuse. The foundation expressed regret that any employees interacted with the disgraced financier.
